Is it suitable to install a roof luggage box for bed camping during self-driving trips?

Advantages:

  1. With the bed camping trip, the number of items brought along is relatively large, especially for long-term self-driving travelers. The roof box can provide great convenience.
  2. Items that are not frequently used or out-of-season clothes can be stored in the roof box, saving the trouble of rearranging items every day.
  3. Installing a roof box can greatly improve the outdoor look of the vehicle.

Disadvantages:

  1. Increased vehicle height and weight will increase wind resistance, wind noise, and slightly increase fuel consumption. However, I can completely accept this based on my personal driving experience.
  2. Some places have height restrictions (I have not encountered any in my almost 4-month trip), and some garages may not be accessible.
  3. Automatic car wash equipment cannot be used because the roof box support will interfere with the car wash brush.

Despite these disadvantages, I still choose to install a roof box because it is very convenient for bed camping during long-term self-driving trips.

Notes:

  1. Regarding registration, different requirements may apply for vehicles with or without crossbars. Consult with the local vehicle administration in advance.
  2. For style selection, choose a flat roof box if height, wind resistance, and wind noise are of concern. Choose a regular height roof box if more luggage and equipment need to be carried. Consult with local authorities about height recommendations in advance.
  3. Choose a roof box size according to the size of the vehicle.
  4. Choose a roof box color that matches or coordinates with the vehicle body color.
  5. Have a professional install the roof box.
  6. Do not pack items that are too heavy, large, or sharp in the roof box.
  7. Secure large items and equipment in the roof box with straps to avoid items rolling or sliding around inside.
  8. Regularly check for loose roof box fixing points. If found, tighten them immediately to avoid risks.
